Abstract

The presentation will include a range of geotechnical issues, related mainly to the management of mine tailings and waste rock. It will address the development of analysis and design techniques aimed at improving the geotechnical stability of engineering works under static and seismic loadings, during the construction phase and upon closure of mine wastes disposal sites. The evolution of guidelines will also be briefly recalled. The contributions of the CGS in the field will be discussed in terms of its structure, operation and services to members. The key role played by volunteers who get involved in the Society's activities will be emphasized. The presentation will include examples of challenges encountered in mining geotechnique, in relation with the CGS Divisions and Committees mandates. Some personal views will also be presented about evolving perspectives for geotechnical professionals and the challenges posed by current issues such as the effect of climate change
